“I love salt!” I have often said this as I was stuffing my mouth with sauerkraut or drinking straight out of the pickle jar. It used to make friends and family laugh. However, when Dr. Oz told me that I was eating 10 times the amount of salt that I should be having, it was no longer funny.
I’m not sure how my salt consumption got so out of hand, but I realized that I had to cut back. But how do you stop a habit that you’ve had for over 25 years? Dr. Oz and Dr. Durvasula have been so supportive and gave me these simple steps to follow:
- The first step was to make a commitment. I have finally realized that 100% commitment and no excuses is the only way for it to work for me.
- Keep it simple. Dr. Ramani suggested just giving up three salty things to start with. That has worked wonders for me. When I was feeling overwhelmed with this new journey, I just focused on these three things: giving up pickles, chips and sauerkraut. I have been able to build from that simple step. I now also stay away from salsa, olives and vegetable juice. When I feel like I’m missing out, I drink lots of water loaded with fresh lime or lemon slices. It gives me the zing that I miss from the spicy pickles.
- The final step for is support. Dr. Oz and his staff, Dr. Ramani and my friends and family have all given me unbelievable support. I wouldn’t have made it this far without them.
