I have always had sleep issues since I was a teenager. At night I had a lot of energy so I would stay up late and then in the mornings I was unable to get up. I would find that I was exhausted all day, often requiring me to take a nap or two throughout the day. At night I would then get a second wind and the cycle would start all over again.
After having a child, my sleep issues really began to interfere with my life, and my doctor suggested sleeping pills, starting me on the strongest dosage. I would take the pill and fall asleep within 20 minutes. My initial reaction thoughts were, “This is great! I can fall asleep whenever I wanted and not toss and turn.” I did notice, however, that I was exhausted all day long, even more than before the pills.
Fast-forward 15 years, and I still take sleeping pills. I lowered the dose with my doctor’s permission, yet I was still exhausted during the day and having issues falling asleep despite the pills.
I turned to Dr. Oz as my last resort, as none of the doctors previously had any answers as to how to get off of these pills. I was hopeful, yet skeptical.
Dr. Oz introduced me to Dr. Breus who has continued to work with me since the show. Dr. Breus reviewed all of my blood work and a sleep study that I previously had. He then came up with a plan for me to follow. Part of the plan was a set sleep schedule with no daily naps so that my body would become so tired at night I would be able to fall asleep without the help of a sleep aid.
It took me a few weeks to get started. In addition to the sleep schedule I decided to cut my sleep aid in half so I am now at the lowest dose. The first few nights it took me about 30 minutes to fall asleep. It is still difficult waking up in the mornings. I am happy to report that once I am up and moving, much of my daytime sleepiness has subsided. As a result, I am much more productive and I get a lot more done during the day rather than sleeping half of my day away.
I will continue to work with Dr. Breus and the goal is to get me off of the sleeping pills completely!
