I’ve started Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen’s diet and exercise plan and I actually find the diet to not be difficult at all. In fact, I rather like it! So far we have switched every bread or pasta to whole wheat. There is so much more flavor. Next, all red meat was replaced by turkey, ground turkey, turkey hot dogs, diced turkey, turkey sausage–you get the idea. Following that came the steel-cut oats, egg whites, yogurt, sugar substitutes and the reduction of sugar in my diet. A typical day for me goes as follows: breakfast is an egg-white omelet with turkey sausage or diced turkey. For lunch I will have a turkey sandwich or will wrap the turkey in a whole-wheat pita. About midday I have a small container of nonfat yogurt and either an apple, some grapes, or some walnuts and almonds. For dinner I’ll choose between turkey chili, boneless skinless chicken breast with veggies or some other lean meat. I don’t have cravings or get really hungry anymore. I stay full and satisfied without feeling overstuffed, bloated or lethargic.
As for exercise, I started walking in front of my house for short distances. Living in the foothills and my cardiac fitness being what it is, I found a flat track that’s helped build my stamina. It’s a half mile long and at first I could make it one lap. Each day I tried my best to go just a little further until I was able to do two laps, a complete mile! I was so excited and proud of myself. I have now joined a gym and walk for 40 minutes a day , averaging 6,000 to 7,000 steps a day! (As a comparison, I started around 1,500 steps a day.) Stay tuned, I am just getting started!
