So we must be the luckiest girls in the world! Myself and my business partner, Catarah, were invited to be on The Dr. Oz Show! We were asked to come on because we own a bakery and naturally (actually, unnaturally), we both have an addiction to sugar. Both Catarah and I have realized that since starting our business, we’ve picked up some extra pounds. This is mainly due to the fact that unlike the majority of our customers who visit us sporadically, we snack all day, every day…on desserts. So when we went on the show we were so excited because we thought we would get some tips on how to drop some pounds. But that’s not quite how it all went down, and I don’t think we were quite ready for what we really found out.
To my dismay, I was told that I have high cholesterol and that if I continue on my path I would put myself at a higher risk of several diseases. Scary, right? I thought so too. So we were put in the hands of Dr. Joel Furhman who introduced us to a Nutritarian style of diet.
Now what you need to know is that I am a Southern girl who enjoys all the goodness of macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler and banana pudding, so when it was suggested that I start on this new way of eating, I was giving some serious side eye. Because I love myself and am interested in being healthy, I decided to give it a shot.
The day after meeting Dr. Furhman, my new diet began. There was and will continue to be a lot to learn, but Dr. Furhman and his staff have been extremely helpful. The very first thing I was told was to completely cut sugar out of my diet. Say what now? I own a bakery, so I wasn’t quite sure how that was going to work out. Well, I decided to give it a shot and guess what? I didn’t die. I’m still standing. It was tough for the first few days. The cravings were strong, but I endured. I was extremely tired, no energy at all but about the fourth day in I began to feel a bit better. Within the first week I had dropped five pounds. Now that is some motivation.
We are now about three weeks in and I am 10 pounds down. For me, like most, seeing results help me to stay focused. So although I am human and I still drool at the sight of cake and really wish I could have that burger off the grill, I have committed myself to really doing this for myself and my health. I’m quite sure this journey will be a challenge (as it already has been) but I am taking the ride.
