How to Contact Your Local Representative to Request an AED

heart-health

On today’s show, Bob Harper described how he almost lost his life when he suffered a massive heart attack at his local gym this past February. Luckily, two doctors were there at the time, and they were able to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to save his life. Does your local gym have an AED on hand? If not, find your state legislator here and feel free to use the sample letter below, so you can help make the gym a safer place. Together we can make sure that every fitness center is properly equipped to handle these life-threatening emergencies.

Dear Representative,

I am a resident of your district, and I am writing to urge you to help protect everyone in our state by passing legislation to require all gyms and health clubs to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) available and to train staff on the proper usage of this device.

Every year in the United States more than 350,000 people suffer from sudden cardiac arrest, and close to 90 percent of them die. CPR and an AED can greatly increase the chance of survival. In fact, the American Red Cross estimates that 50,000 lives could be saved with increased AED availability.

Recently, fitness guru Bob Harper suffered from sudden cardiac arrest while working out in a New York City gym. If it can happen to someone like Bob, that means it can happen to anyone. Fortunately, New York is among the 15 states that, unlike ours, require an AED in gyms, which is why Bob’s life was saved. On The Dr. Oz Show, Bob said he will no longer go to a gym that doesn’t have an AED, and now neither will I.

Please help make our state as healthy and safe as the others by passing meaningful legislation to ensure that there is an AED in every gym.

Sincerely,
