The Mood-Beauty Connection

skin problemsHow do you feel today? Even if you tend to keep your emotions to yourself, your mood can still be seen all over your face. As if stress and depression aren’t bad enough, the way they manifest in your appearance make them even more of a drag.

Negative feelings trigger the production of cortisol, a stress hormone that can do everything from thin your hair to boost cravings for sugary foods and cause the body to store extra fat. Stress-induced acne is another dreaded way that your tense mood can show on the surface. Again, your hormones are to blame.

The cells that make sebum (an oily matter in the skin that mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria to clog hair follicles and create pimples) have receptors for stress hormones. It’s suggested that they start to overproduce when you’re frazzled, causing that stubborn acne. This same frazzled mindset can also get in the way of collagen production, which is essential for building beautiful, healthy skin.

I know it’s easier said than done, but make it a priority to bring daily joy into your life. Find things that make you happy and help you unwind. Not only will you feel much better, but you’ll even look better, too!
