Traveling can be tough on your body – physically and mentally – and when you’re constantly on the road, it’s easy to feel run down.

Whether you’re headed to a conference across the country, visiting family overseas or even a Grand Slam event, it’s important to fuel your body with the things it needs to perform its best. I know that my health means everything to me and it definitely goes hand-in-hand with how I perform on the court, so here are some tips on how I stay feeling my best when on the go.

Keep Moving

Choosing something to focus on and strive toward is important when maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. My biggest trick to staying fit on the road is simply forcing myself to stay active – you’ve got to move! Whether you take a walk around your hotel after a meeting, go for a run, swim some laps in the pool or do yoga in your room, getting your body moving will help you feel better.

Despite always being on the go, I maintain my fitness routine in between tournaments and weight train with whatever is available. Even during the few months I have off at the end of the year, I make sure to keep my body in motion. This is one of the reasons I made the decision to run the NYC Marathon – my first marathon ever—last year!

In order to feel great physically and mentally, treat your overall fitness as seriously as you do any other thing in your life. Make an effort to spend time working on your health, even when you’re on the road, and you’ll begin to feel more confident and ready to take on any task at hand.

Fuel Up

But it doesn’t end there. Making smart food choices will also keep your body feeling great. Traveling can definitely take a toll on your body, and even though I have become used to sleeping on planes, constantly being on the move wears me out and makes it more challenging to constantly feel healthy and fresh. This is where properly fueling your body comes into play.

I try to eat sensibly every day, focusing on consuming enough protein, carbs and fresh fruits and vegetables that are full of fiber.

My biggest secret for staying healthy on the road is staying well hydrated. Staying hydrated will help you recover after a workout and will help avoid certain digestive troubles so that you always feel your best.
